THE WEEKLY SNATCH 6
So here's a quick snapshot of my weekly highlights up until 20th July - ish.
It's all about a household of illness and there being little or no time to myself for the listening of music....
Regular Punkmonger visitors know that I have a hard spot for this Picasso of punk. It seems like ages ago that we exchanged words over whether a dog with two dicks could actually be as happy as the parable would have us believe. But the measured words and gentle way that Jesus Hooligan won the argument turned out to be the dogs bollocks and turned me into a believer.
Swamp Stomp is a CD of unfettered tribal rhythms and pared back lyrics. I would describe it as the Jesus Hooligan cubist period, it's pure and it's genius. I smiled throughout, I danced in the kitchen and I got sore palms in the car - not necessarily connected.
This is the joy of music, connoisseur edition. Each track centres around a repetitive phrase and is brought alive by the percussive talents of Jesus Hooligan and his Antfarm Studio disciples. Jesus Hooligan breathes a creative blast of clean, fresh oxygen into the lifeblood of punk. Amen.
Airdrie (mainly) band, Reaction released a great album in 2018, Keep it Weird, Keep it Wired is still a regular on my car system. When I saw that these 4 tracks had been released on the Scot-centric, New York based Tarbeach Records I had no hesitation in purchasing.
I wondered whether there had been a flagrant disregard for Westminster lockdown protocols, but no, this CD of 4 extra tracks were recorded before lockdown and act as a, 'we're still here' reminder of their excellent album, and hopefully serves as a taster of things yet to come.
If Reaction were a fine bottle of red sitting on the punk racks of a discerning bon viveur, then they would be describing this band to their fellow partakers as a rare vintage, supplying a CD overflowing with hints of CBGB's and a dark undercurrent of the post punk era. This is all accompanied with the intensity and urgency of the vocal hit from a Molotov cocktail. They're both subtle and in your face, and sometimes at the same time. Four polished tracks from an accomplished and underrated band. (side note : these 4 tracks were played by me on a continuous loop during a recent 90 minute car journey - I loved every fuckin minute of it).
