If you can remember 1985 then you probably need me to shout or increase the font size.  This was the year that The Godfathers started up their engines and hit the music scene.  Apart from the occasional stall they have been blasting up and down the highways of the world with their brand of gritty Rhythm & Blues, Rock Punk n' Roll ever since.

I think most punks have a soft spot for this band, and a hell of a lot still follow them, they really are a 'crossover band' far too musical, far too lyrical to be classed as punk, and yet, they have brutally catchy call and respond choruses, socio-political commentary and sheer in your face attitude.  Add to that the suits, the ties and the guitars and it's a mind blower of non pigeon-holing proportions.

Whether you pogo, shuffle your feet or shake your non existent hair in that head banging sort of way you will all be able to appreciate this band.  The fact that they still attract good crowd numbers, still produce new material and still gain TV coverage stands as testament to their longevity and the fact that their formula works.

It will be 35 years this month, since The Godfathers played at The Embassy Club in London.  There are lots of plans in the offing to mark the occasion, the release of a double 'A' side single being the first.

There has always been a rich history of top musicians performing in The Godfathers, the recently re-vamped line up is both exciting and is in keeping with that tradition.

Founding member Peter Coyne is now joined by guitarist Richie Simpson & drummer Billy Duncanson (both previously in Heavy Drapes & Baby’s Got A Gun) bass player Jon Priestley from The Damned & guitarist Wayne Vermaak.

The single features two brand new tracks, 'I'm Not Your Slave' and 'Wild & Free'.  It's tribal, in your face unadulterated rock n roll of the premier league kind, nothing to choose between the new songs, both do their job from start to finish in a no nonsense fashion.  Being able to get both tracks in one package is an added bonus.

I'm not your slave opens with a 'hey hey hey - whoo!' an immediate crowd pleaser with rip-saw guitar licks highlighting the snarling vocals.  It's a delight, and just like those previous throat grabbing classics from earlier years, it's a song that will have you joining in without hesitation.

Wild and free starts with throbbing guitars, these are then joined by Peters' vocals demanding the need to be 'wild and free', there's a chanting join-in chorus and trademark guitar breaks, another stand out single, excellent production, excellent sound, excellent music.

It sounds like the band have been together for ages, let's hope that will happen, there's more to come from The(se) Godfathers.

When we do get the chance to be wild and free again I will be sure to see this line up live and hopefully they will belting out these tracks to packed venues very soon.

Now the sales pitch...
