MINATORE ; TOP DOWN EP

Picture
Minatore are Morgan Pettigrew, (drums/vox) and Tommy Keeling, (guitars/vox).

Punked up sleazy rock performers of garage dirt sounds who produce kick ass music whilst holding onto the coat tails of sanity by their fingernails.

Blistering power and a raw DIY attitude are evident throughout this 4 track EP.  Each track has something different to offer, but all are underpinned by a powerful mix of vitality and danger.

The opening track is the title of the EP - Top Down has a blistering opening and then burns you to the bone with a killer fuzz-filled hook and catchy lyrics. You could easily imagine Vin Diesel having just slaughtered a horde of zombies and then climbing into his shiny black Oldsmobile and driving off into the distance - Top Down fading out as he disappears from view.

Featherstone has a great frenetic opening accompanied by some sweet rock vocals, these are then replaced and the track showcases some solid guitar playing and rocks out to a satisfying finish.  There is a great video of this track here.
Moving On has you believing that this is a quieter number and then ambushes you with indecently thrilling guitars and unnerving vocals.  Belter of a track, think early Motorhead with a hint of paranoia.

Timeshifter is the final track, and underlines the fact that this duo are willing to explore their music and take listeners on a totally unpredictable, experimental and exciting journey, birdsong, thunderclaps and buddha chimes draw you into a chilltastic and trippy reverie.  This is then interrupted by a muffled drum beat and guitar sound coming through the walls from the room next door.

I was very impressed with their live performance at the Easter Weekend Festival, and unhesitatingly recommend that you go and see them.  You can stream from bandcamp or buy the EP direct from the band, the packaging is also a hint as to what to expect from Minatore, it’s both quirky and charming with a definite artistic flair.

Look them out - currently doing some live shows

Salvation Jayne :  Burn it Down (Single)

Picture
Salvation Jayne are a Kent 4 piece alt rock band, they are ;

Chess Smith - Vocals
Holly Kinnear - Guitar
Dan Lucas - Bass
Tor Charlesworth - Drums

Picture

I had previously heard about this band from a promoter friend, but haven't seen them play and they had dropped off my overloaded radar.  Then I received a link from a trusted source and it pointed me towards ‘Burn It Down’ their forthcoming new single. I was unsure what to expect, I mean I’m a gnarled old punk right?

I was intrigued, the opening riffs are killer.   After a bit of asking about and general nosiness I felt that I had sufficiently stalked Salvation Jayne to listen properly to this offering.

The band describe themselves as playing their own style of ‘dirty rock n roll’.  I guess that I’m used to rougher and dirtier bands as ‘Burn it Down’ sounds pretty polished to me.  Subsequent listens have made me realise that the tune has a subtle hook and that the vocals really bring this track to life.

Great, a jagged frantic guitar opening, then a quick breather before kicking into the driving drum beats and coruscating, classic female rock vocals.  The mid section allows for some gentle swaying (but not with lighters held aloft - obvs) along with some lead guitar dexterity, and then it’s back to the excellent vocals and final crescendo.

Salvation Jayne have served up a banging rock soufflé, it is a sexy melt-in-the-mouth pleasure of a dishy track.  They add a freshness and vibrancy to a very commercially viable sound and identity.

They have been working on their live set and are about to embark on a series of gigs.  I reckon that with regular shows they will become a hot ticket pretty quickly in 2017.  I can tell you that there are a couple of promoters watching with interest as to how this line up progresses.  I too will be looking to get to see them in the near future.

Follow them on Facebook to get updates as to the release date of the single, (recommended).

LaFlamme : GET THE LOVE ON EP

Picture
I first saw LaFlamme at a gig in High Wycombe, it was one of those days/nights with lots of favourite bands on.  I was at the bar (along with a few others) when Laflamme came on, I hadn’t heard them before and was willing to sacrifice the opening numbers to get a beer, they started their set and I quickly decided to leave the queue and go back to watch and listen.  I was soon joined by the others.  Their set was full of catchy crowd pleasers with rocktastic riffs.  They have the attitude and skills to put on a good live set, no surprise that they are getting regular bookings.

LaFlamme sit between the alt rock and the punk genres, their guitar licks are tending towards the heavier rock and the vocals veer towards a post punk style.  Maybe it would feel more comfortable if they were to jump one way or the other, but dealing with what is in front of us is their new three track EP.  Having established that they are a good live act, this EP illustrates that they have settled into a solid unit providing quality sounds.

The three tracks on the 'Get the love' on EP are diverse in character and subject, but each one is underpinned by driving guitars and catchy songs.  Good balance on production here too.

GET THE LOVE ON
A nod to the past, both vocally and musically,

MR STARDUST
Alvin or Ziggy?  Likely to be a live favourite as we all love to join in with a few nah nah nah’s.

TEMPTED
Great opening, probably the punkiest of the three tracks due to the vocal style and lyrics.  Tempted can be obtained from the bands Facebook page (if you like it and follow etc).

The EP is available in hard copy and digital download on the bandcamp link and at gigs

XSLF : ARRUP BANG (ALBUM REVIEW)

Picture
If I was allowed to stretch the truth, just a little bit, then I would be able to say that Alternative Ulster was the first single which I bought, I could then wear that as a badge of honour, (I’m less likely to admit that it was probably Sugar Baby Love by The Rubettes).  But from the moment when I became the proud owner of the Alternative Ulster single I became a big fan of Stiff Little Fingers, (and still am).
There have been line up changes and departures, and associated fan furore and rumours. The vocal and unjustified split allegiances are a mystery to me, I watch Stiff Little Fingers and XSLF and enjoy them both, for different reasons.

Arrup Bang is the new album from XSLF and when I say ‘new’ I mean that all tracks are brand spankers, there are no re-hashes of bygone classics.  I really should find out from the band what the title of the album is all about, but maybe that would spoil the mounting speculation!  (I reckon it's to do with that cruel pastime where kids inflated frogs using a drinking straw.....but enough of that!)
OK, you now know that I’m a fan, and when you realise that it was recorded at Buck Defects Studio (another early icon for me) you would guess that I am highly unlikely to pick this album to pieces, but I’ll try to be as honest as I can be.
I was initially disappointed by the faint vocals and the heavy guitars, but soon realised that my daughter had changed the settings on the equaliser.  Once rectified I sat back and got into the album.
My first thought was that there are some high points and a couple of tracks that were not so great - I left it for a while and then went back to playing it in the car, I truly believe that this album grows on you, it sneaks in under the skin and has you singing along, both with the songs and then whilst going about your business.

Here are a couple of insights ; Jim and Ave both put in admirable vocal performances and surprise of all surprises Henry lets on that after 40 years he still doesn’t know what punk is!

TRACK LIST

1    RICH MAN
A great start to the album, super charged guitars and biting lyrics.  There's a video  of the track here.  Really on point here.

2    I NEED YOU
Rhythmic guitars and super catchy repetitive lyrics, grabs you from the opening bars, a crowd pleaser.
3    QUEEN ANNE’S REVENGE
This was one of the tracks I struggled with, it's a grower.

4    WOODSTOCK
Absolute truth, love this track, really well put together.  Nothing else needed.

5    LIGHT IN THE DARK
Speeding guitars, Motorhead style - get's my vote.
6    WHAT IS PUNK?
The perrenial question!  What a blinder, I defy you not to get hooked by this.  Wry humour, and a constant earworm.  Top track.

7    RAINING STONES
The rasping rock voice of Ave is great, the storyline is obvious.  Makes for another strong track.

8    ARRUP BANG
Kind of an instrumental, concentrate on the 'Arrup Bang' vocals and you'll miss some fine
gee-tar playing.
9    GONE AWAY
Bit skank-ish, not a favourite, I still can't help myself joining in with 'I can't help myself' though.

10    CATCH YERSELF ON
Another 'join in and assume the dodgy accent' song.  This was a favourite from the first couple of listens.

11    WORDS
This was chosen as a pre-release teaser, quite right too - one of the strongest tracks on the album.  Link to video
12    WOLFTOWN
Brilliant closer, semi acoustic style and a tender commentary on the bands home city.

This is an accomplished album and a real treat for fans of great guitar driven (punk) rock music, the lyrics are punchy and of this time, social and political commentary is a recurring theme.  This Belfast band have been around a few blocks in their time, and their music is all the more relevant for this experience,  I really hope that some of these songs become part of the live repertoire, especially ‘What is Punk’ maybe singing this one at a concert will stop it from being an ever present earworm!

Purchase the album HERE             Band Facebook HERE                 Website HERE

Finally, here are some notable dates for the numerous gigs that the band have - if you have been reluctant going to see XSLF through pre-conceptions or prejudice (how ironic), then I suggest you rectify that.  You will be won over, these are great guys, genuine hard working musicians and you will have a great night joining in with songs old and new.

Noose : Julie Andrews (digital single)

Picture

Nottingham band Noose release this single today.  And blow me, (start the Kenneth Williams alert system) it's right up my alley.  Power pop punk with tongue in cheek lyrics, sneakily catchy sing along chorus and really rather clever.   It will have you singing along in no time, then having a quick look around to make sure that your ultra respectable colleagues/neighbours don't catch you being politically incorrect!
It's a pound to download and with a chorus bemoaning :

I wished my baby was like the girlies in the porno movies
But it turns out she was just like
Julie Andrews from The Sound of Music

you may gather that it's a song that will appeal more to the Dick Emery generation, (the band have been going on and off since 1979 so not surprising really).  The single is well put together and bodes well for the new line up.  It's a quid to download, once you've done that, take your chosen device up to your bedroom and get all hot, bothered and nostalgic with Julie Andrews.

The Black Pitts : B Movie Extra album

Picture
With an educated garage rock/punk sound The Black Pitts B Movie Extra album picks you up for a Friday night joyride and takes you on a journey through the backstreets of New York in the late 70’s.  With Joey Ramone and David Johansen taking it in turns in the drivers seat and stopping off here and there to pass the time with The Stooges and The Damned, it's a riff-fuelled journey so strap in and enjoy.

This Dublin based trio regularly play gigs in their home City and are part and parcel of the resurgent punk/alternative scene happening in Ireland right now.  The depth and energy of the sound is complimented by clever catchy lyrics and a great production.  Each track on the album stands on its own merits, the words are of the here and now, but make no mistake the influences here are straight from CBGB’s.  The 13 tracks are over in a flash (just over 30 minutes, even with the occasional mid track guitar break) and unlike The Stooges occasional self-indulgent turgidity you bounce along with The Black Pitts from start to finish.

B Movie Extra is a really strong album, put it on, turn up the collar on your leather jacket and let yourself go.  You can purchase the album by following the bandcamp link below, and check out other gigs and news by liking their Facebook page.

JESUS HOOLIGAN : STRIPPED BARE NAKED CD

Picture
Beautiful and stirring, and that’s just the artwork on this album.

Anyone who has connected with Jesus Hooligan across social media or, in his previous life as lead shouter in a variety of hardcore punk bands will undoubtedly have been drawn to his external roguish charm and humour.  But scratch at that veneer and you will very quickly find an honest, caring and motivated creative soul.  The stripped bare EP displays his creative soul and then exposes it for our aural inspection.

I have been following some of the journey for this EP via FaceBook but I was intent on reviewing it with an open mind and a blank canvas, I think most punks and alternative types are drawn towards the unusual, the ground breaking and the underdog, therefore it’s fill yer boots time.

Uncluttered, percussive alternate light and darkness.  That’s it in a nutshell, and for those that wander off mumbling into their porridge that they ‘just don’t get it,’ then play the album again, and listen, the themes may seem dark at first, the rhythms may appear menacing, but if you open yourself up to it, then there is a real sense of pleasure and exhilaration to be had.

The tracks on this album pick you up, take you to open heathland and then hit you with powerful unadulterated truths, there’s nothing to hide behind, no clever guitar, no vocal skulduggery, just heartfelt lyrics delivered with passion, this music needs to be received with an open mind and open arms, then you will embrace it and feel good and warm about the experience.

I have to highlight ‘Stay’ and ‘Fight War not Wars’, both are immense and primitively tribal, both are shining beacons, but for differing reasons, I’ll leave you to make your own mind up on these.

I found that the alternation between light and dark on the track list worked well, even though some of the topics will be difficult for some I would encourage everyone to listen, I found it an honest and thoughtful album, and a courageous one too.  Well played. (Don’t Get Me Fucking Started) may well become my morning alarm tune!

The album will be released very soon, check the Jesus Hooligan FaceBook page for further news and how to buy.

Crash Induction :  Concrete Punx Charity Gigs
Feb 23rd

Picture
I was watching some old John Lee Hooker footage this morning and came to the conclusion that musicians don’t have to be technically perfect for them to be enjoyable……

Ladies & Gentlemen, I give you

Crash Induction are a self proclaimed party punk band from somewhere near the ever forgettable Newport Pagnell services.  As with a lot of bands of this ilk they don’t appear to take themselves very seriously and are adept at underplaying their abilities rather than ‘bigging themselves up’.

Their lyrics are clever, and their songs are catchy.  Last years Work Sirens EP (still available - and free download here, though there’s a pay what you want option) has a couple of crackers on it.  Half Rice/Half Chips and Sick Note are very catchy indeed.  And I may well chance my arm and ask the Bombardier Billy Wells to play See You Next Tuesday on his monday morning punk show.

Why are they getting some Punkmonger attention?  Well, they have two charity gigs very soon, and it would be great for the guys and the charities to get your support.

Wreck-Age : Orbital EP
Feb 22nd

Picture
When the tumble dryer of life unexpectedly catches fire and leaves you sobbing into the ashes of your vintage Exploited T-shirt you may just need a shot of the good stuff to cheer you up.  Wreck-age provide a mainline quicksilver hit of punk rock adrenaline with this EP, lifting you up and then leaves you wanting some more, repeat as required.

These L.A. (Leicester Area) musicians have joined together and are currently flying under the radar to a lot of folk out there.  Their influences being drawn from The Clash and classic 1977 punk sounds this band will certainly please us (very) older punks and get the young ones dancing, everyone and everything works together on the EP to bring the listener 4 well produced and accomplished tracks.

Although it is the title track of the EP  'Orbital' for me is a good opener, and 2 Minutes follows it along at a great pace, and gets you moving, but these two serve to whet your appetite for the last two massive numbers,  ‘Cop Out’ and ‘Turn Up to Dance’ are absolute belters.

Cop Out is Strummer-esque, (at his best) and then some, I’ve lost count of the number of times that I’ve hit repeat on this track, and I’m still not tired of it, this song is a real crowd pleaser, a musical jewel that needs very little polishing to make it sparkle.  And then comes Turn Up to Dance, with a darker tone to Cop Out, but it's easy on the ears and catchy as hell, by this time you are really drawn into the vocals, the expert guitar playing, it's classic punk.

You need this EP in your punk life, get it from the band, message them on their FaceBook page and spend the price of a London pint for some joy.

Wreck-Age have some live gigs coming up, they are doing loads and supporting various charities, (details on their FaceBook page) and I expect that they will surprise many, and those that are already in the know will have a smug grin.  Get educated, look them up - and feel the pleasure.

And The Wasters : State of Repair EP
Feb '17

Picture
Not long ‘til the Festivals are upon us, the longer days, the last minute preparation, the journey to the regular pitch and the meet up with friends…. . Whether it’s Boomtown or Bearded, Undercover or Rebellion, Blank Generation or Deerstock, this bunch have your festival journey soundtrack covered.

And the Wasters (formerly Will Tun and the wasters) are no strangers to festivals themselves, this Reading/Bristol collective come together to make a Ska-Folk-Punk sound incorporating a Balkan/Latin/Dub fusion.  The band feels like it could have a few musical directional surprises up their (record) sleeves, but there are none lurking on this collection, I heard a little bit of a late Pogues feel in amongst these mighty tunes, (but then I often do).

This potent mix could bring organised chaos to your lugholes, but instead you get a real clarity of sound, great to listen to with the windows down and the sun (remember that?) shining upon you and making the world seem ok again.  Each track on the EP has a bounce-along ska rhythm and sing-along lyrics.  They bring together the different influences and sounds to create a fine, feelgood vibe.  A sound that will make you smile, dance and repeat.

The State of Repair EP is due to be released on 25th February.  It will be a pay as much as you want download, (I reckon a fiver is a fair representation of 15 minutes worth of enjoyment - but enough of my hobbies) It has 5 tracks, 4 longer numbers and an intro dub, giving the listener 17 minutes of happiness and enjoyment.  Each track is strong, well written and if you can stop your skanking for one cotton picking minute, and listen to the lyrics, they carry a relevant message too.  Reduce, Reuse and Rebel just edges it for me, a track that encapsulates the And the Wasters sound in one tasty byte.

                             Track List

SNEAK PREVIEW : TARBEACH RECORDS COMPILATION
02/02/17

Picture
I first saw Heavy Drapes just over a year ago, a word of mouth recommendation caused me to check them out online and then, I went to see them live.  I was impressed, maybe a little awe-struck.  What a show.  I've been to see them a few times since, Edinburgh, London, Skegness (classy eh?) and a couple more - they are fantastic live, a real shot in the arm to the current scene.

For those not in the loop.... Heavy Drapes are an Edinburgh band with an explosive, self combusting past, some of them nearly made it once (in another life), and they make no secret of the fact that they want to give it their all this time around.  They have the stage presence and the attitude to make you take notice, and if you chose not to then, that’s your funeral.  They're not hanging around for you to make your mind up, get on board or fuck off.

Over the last year Heavy Drapes have leap-frogged loads of established bands and become one of the most talked about outfits on the punk/alternative scene.  2016 saw appearances at Blank Generation, Rebellion and the Skegness Alternative Music Festivals they attracted bigger audiences than the promoters anticipated each show enhancing their popularity.  This lot were never going to be happy to throw a pebble into the 40 year old tranquil pond of punk rock, they chose the biggest boulder they could find and threw it into the middle from a great height.  The resulting tsunami has been described as the new wave of the old wave.  And they have soaked a fair few happy punters and promoters along the way.

The band have picked up fans from all over the UK, they already have a good following both here and abroad, it is no surprise that headline shows and repeat festival dates are a regular feature on the Heavy Drapes 2017 calendar.  They draw the punters in wherever they play.  And it’s not just to see if the social media hype can be backed up by their performance - it can, and it does.

Nightrippin’ is going to be released on a new compilation album in April 2017.  New York City label Tarbeach Records are where you will find most things Heavy Drapes, (maybe not fridge magnets just yet).  The Tarbeach Collective Compilation CD is sure to feature this number and others from fellow Scots and stable mates Re@ction, the roster also includes Electric Fits, the Zips,Monkey dont Care and Super 100s.

This track sees Heavy Drapes get together with established and acclaimed music producer Mark Freegard (he also produces  their much anticipated debut album), Nightrippin' is a great number when played live, heavy guitar riffs and a sing-along hook and chorus pull the crowd in and have them joining in from the outset, a cracking choice for the compilation.

I’ve been lucky enough to hear the second mix on this track, the production, and the band performance elevate Nightrippin’ to a whole new level, all the while retaining the original integrity and energy of how it is played live.  Nightrippin’ is uplifting, it makes you feel shiny and happy, capable of beauty-full hazy promises.

Having recently listened to The Trainspotting 2 soundtrack (probably a bit better than that of the first), I'd recommend that you put all of that to one side and play this instead, this one song could open and close both films, and then have you swaggering down the road with your arms open wide and giving a passing taxi or cop car the big V’s.

Irvine Welsh wrote…. “By definition, you have to live until you die. Better to make that life as complete and enjoyable an experience as possible, in case death is shite, which I suspect it will be.”  So buy the CD, it might just complete your life and make it more enjoyable.  In fact buy the Heavy Drapes stuff at their shows,  (new T-shirts, designed by legendary punk artist Lonely Boy now with the band) and the collectors items records from Tarbeach.  Ignore them at your peril,  Heavy Drapes give you a full on musical experience, 4 punks that play great music, they need to be big in 2017 or they will implode.
Choose life, choose Heavy Drapes  ...... ride the new wave of the old wave.

(Dammit!  I vowed I wouldn’t do the 'choose life' cliche).

AMBITION DEMOLITION :
Punk for Life EP review 28/01/17

Picture

Beware! Repeated playing of this CD may cause happiness and the occasional outburst of random singing, (erm shouting) from the listener.

A 6 track introduction from this punk at heart West Country trio.  Upon first listening I was struck by the simple directness of the CD as a whole, it absolutely whizzed by, and I enjoyed the whole 19 minutes of it.  I returned to it later on in the day and found myself joining in with the choruses, I was reminded of the early punk bands, listening to London and The Vibrators on the old Ferguson turntable, (ahh!)  Ambition Demolition give you the immediate hit of punk rock as it used to be, as it was meant to be.

'Awkward' is a repeat and dance, classic punk opener, an ideal appetiser for the ensuing numbers.  'Us against the World' stands out for me, it’s an immediate fist in the air, pogo, and arms round the shoulder of your mate, a solid shout along song and a proper crowd pleaser.  And finally, just to send us off with a skip and a smile, (or a grimace and a groan due to the surprise of joining in)  we are treated to a proper punk love song, 'You're the One' doesn't have the bittersweet lyrics of the Buzzcocks Ever fallen in Love…. but a more straightforward sentiment and just as catchy.  A fantastic opener from Ambition Demolition,  I'm looking forward to seeing them live, and as they say 'see you at the front, and then at the bar afterwards' well it would be rude note to.

Now here's the exciting geeky stuff... It's only a fiver for the CD, it's limited and it's hand numbered, you can get it from the band at gigs (lots in the offing) or message them (
@AmbitionDemolition), or buy the CD on eBay.  It even comes with a booklet and displays a proper tracklist!

CANNIBAL ANIMAL :
Human Manuals EP review 24/01/17

Picture
It’s great to be able to look forward with anticipation to certain things in life, and it is certainly the case with the lovely e-mails from Futureproof Promotions.  An absolute stormer of an EP and more new music to get unhealthily excited about.

Human Manuals is a 5 track EP from Cannibal Animal, it’s new and it’s really rather good.

Cannibal Animal are another talented Hull based band throwing their collective hat into the ring for greater recognition in 2017.  This three piece psych-fuelled band have the sounds and the energy to turn their particular hat into an ear-seeking missile of immense proportions.

Imagine that you find yourself wandering through a dark forest, it’s a bit unsettling but you are managing to keep your shit together and then, the shadows begin to move and red eyes are focussing on you from the darkness - Human Manuals could quite easily be the accompanying soundtrack for the angst ridden dash and scramble to get away from the zombie horde.

All 5 tracks on this EP are really strong, I’m bouncing between ‘Cracked’ and ‘Grand Theft Manual’ as my favourite pick.  The band create a massive sound, really fresh and exciting.  If I had to peg them (hate this, but it’s easier than breaking each sound down) I would describe their sound as being similar to a Sonic Youth/Fat White Family/The Fall amalgam.

Cannibal Animal don’t offer you anthemic sing along songs, they give you a dark, rhythmic, psych-fuelled guitar driven journey to lose yourself in.  I guess that I came through the forest unscathed, puffing and panting with relief, but with the adrenaline still coursing through my veins.  Then I find myself turning round and going back into the darkness for another hit, my red eyes glinting in the moonlight.…

FIFTEEN YEARS ; WELCOME TO HELL
(EP RELEASE ON BANDCAMP 13/01/2017)

Picture
Let me introduce you to Fifteen Years, a new band playing dark skater punk, with heavy riffs, drum-driven songs with a menacing, macabre sing-along edge.
This all male 4 piece punk ensemble hail from the vibrant alt scene in Bristol, they started in 2016 and gained a good following from the get go.  Adding this well timed release and more gig dates will serve to increase their exposure and ensure that they are destined for an exciting 2017.
The ep is fast-moving, comprising of 6 excellent and exciting tracks.  It's memorable smack-you-between-the-eyes, raw punk.  Opening with the throbbing 'Come On and Die' you are left in no doubt what this band are all about, climb aboard, hold on and enjoy the sub 15 minute ride, there will be thrills, spills and a whole lot of messy fun.  The 6 tracks speed along on a roller coaster ride heading into the black hole of euphoria, coming out into the light out of breath but, ready to go around again.  Having listened to the whole playlist pretty solid for a day and a bit, I didn't once find that I was looking to skip any of the tracks, I found the Stephen King like themed lyrics ingrained themselves almost instantly, musically the band are pretty tight, they have a great well balanced feel.
'Mary' being my most favourite track on this offering, but I could just as easy say that of 'Reasons to Believe'.  The link to the 2 quid download is below, as are other social media type links.  Oh, and be sure to check them out live really soon at the Exchange in Bristol on the 17th of this month.   It always excites me when I listen to a new band, it's extra special when their music is this good.

Weekend Recovery : Don't try and stop me
(single release 27/01/2017)

Picture
No excuses, no bullshit. It's a rock review!
Weekend Recovery are an up and coming 5 piece from Kent.  They are eminently commercial, the lead vocals (supplied by Lorin) make this band stand out.  They have been busy since their incarnation in 2016 and are making big stompy strides into a very exciting, and crowded alt-rock arena.  The musicianship is exemplary, but it is the clarity of the vocals which makes you stop and take note, and for me marks this band as having the potential to go big.  They are receiving attention from both written and radio media, I would be confident in saying that they will be receiving a whole lot more by this time next year.
And now you will have to trust me, as the track I'm reviewing isn't available just yet, but it's only a short wait until January 27th.
'Don't Try And Stop Me', is the second single from Weekend Recovery, it has a slightly more alternative and definitely a more punchy sound than some of the tracks on their initial Rumours ep.  I do hope that this is a sign of their chosen direction and their evolution will continue along this path, if they do this they will attract a lot of plaudits from across the rock music spectrum.  From a quiet start the track rips into your ears and before you know it, you are reeled in and hooked.  DJ radio friends get in touch with the band and ask for this track, it will be very popular, very quickly.  It's a fantastic curtain raiser for their forthcoming tour (of the same name - see below) starting in February 2017.  Take note, these guys are finding their feet, they have certainly found their sound, they are on a long, and hopefully successful journey.

Delinquents : Next Generation (single)

Picture
I usually try to see a band before agreeing to do a review, so when I was sent this one I had a crafty listen and realised that there was a very strong chance that I would be seeing them in the future anyway.
Delinquents are a 3-piece punk rock band based in Dundee.  This single is uncomplicated, with sing along lyrics and a 'Fuck you' attitude (and hook) in keeping with the situation of today, and mainstream punk in general.  I think that these guys are keeping a fair amount in reserve, (check out 'Keep on Choking' and 'Waste of Time' on you tube) they clearly have the ability to throw a punk influenced shoe-gazing number together.
Next Generation is a sub 2 minute track, it had me tapping away within the first few moments, it held no surprises, and will no doubt have folk joining in and shouting 'fuck you' back at the band, the speaker, or the car in front very quickly indeed.  The overall sentiment of this song is spot on, it really does feel like we are saying just that to the next generation, so whilst we wrestle with our consciences and the disgust at the state of the universe get up, stand up and join in with some Delinquents doing their musical best to help.
It's great to see that they have already committed to a number of gigs in 2017 and that they will be getting some decent exposure next year.  I look forward to catching them live, it feels like there is more to come from Delinquents.

La Bête Blooms; Breaking In

A real, look you in the face and kick you where it hurts, (but in a pleasing way) sound.
This Hull (post punk) outfit have evolved from an introverted, shoe gazingly understated melodic alt rock band into a powerful, assured and clever unit capable of great live performances and fantastic rocking tracks.
Be aware that these ain’t a Slowdive ‘don’t look at me’ type of group, the guitar feedback, the slightly troubling lyrics and the driving bass have a great here and now feel.  If the brevity and power of Breaking In is meant as a teaser of what is to come then it does the job perfectly.
Taken from the new (released 2017 but available to pre order) ‘I know it’s nothing’ EP, this track and video underlines why La Bête Blooms are regularly on the 6 music playlist and why they are Lamacq, Laverne and Robinson favourites.
Breaking In is a statement that the beast is certainly blooming and 2017 is likely to see them take off, attracting fans and plaudits from across the ages and a few niche rock genres.

PUNK BY NATURE GIG : BOARS HEAD - 12/11/16

Picture
It was one of those weeks, proper man flu had struck and the weekend was in jeopardy, but this was a gig not to be missed.  Two bands that I had seen before and thoroughly enjoy, a band that I wanted to see and one that I wasn't aware of.  Chuck those into the mix at a venue that is getting some really good comments from punters and bands alike and it was just about enough incentive to raise a poorly Lazarus.
Of course I arrived early and was immediateley met with an 'Hello Mate' just like the Mockney Cockney himself from 5 Go Mad front man, Alan Calver!  They had travelled from the deep South, (Portsmouth) and their early entourage included the subject of one of their newer songs, Syd Mankini (all the way from Telford).  The Boars Head is in the town centre-ish and is a great, friendly live music pub.  Impressive.  Good beer, cheap prices, and excellent service.
Jason (Punk by Nature) puts on some great shows at this place, and this was definitely the case tonight.
5 Go Mad opened with their self deprecating songs.  Their sometimes direct lyrics and sound harking back to early-ish 80's punk, but with tongue firmly in cheek.  It is clear to see why this crazy crew are getting regular bookings and called back to more and more festivals.  They rattled through their set, new bassist Adam has fitted in well, and tonight, Wozza kept his kit on.  Great start.
Indecent Assault, a 3 piece from nearby Dudley were next on, this is the band that I hadn't heard of.  Anarcho Punk is a bit of the scene that I have a love/hate relationship with, these guys fell into the former.  Very impressive, really got this lot - and they are now on the list of bands that I need to see again.  Their opener 'A Free Country' was the highlight for me in a really strong set.
Born To Destruct hands up, I have a real soft spot for this Roarsome band.  If you walk away from one of their shows and can't manage a little skip and a massive grin then you have probably flatlined.  I was a bit concerned as the usual 5 piece for BTD was down to 3 in number, but there was no need to worry as Woodstock and Dr Stuart provided the guitary rowdiness and Daiv banged and crashed away rather professionally at the back tonight, instead of being up front with the other wranglers.  Think this was the first time that I'd seen BTD without the accompanying destruction crew of some MacGregors and Dicky, the one man windmill, in tow.  I think I became hoarse two songs in, and so was unable to drown out the rather loud lady in front of me.  This set was over all too quickly, I barely had time to buy some (more) of their excellent merch - though I did mange a few bits.
Fukdust 4 Total embarrassment time, how the fuck have I not seen this band before now?  What a great end to the night, I rarely take pics of a band that I haven't seen before as being an old male of the species I find that concentrating on 2 things at the same time is nigh on impossible.  And so it was here, I was intent on not missing one of the sing along lyrics, nor the great rocking riffs thrown into every song.  This band rocked every song, delivering a great glittery/sleazy pin your ears back or else sound.  I had a 'I'm sure I recognise these' type of moment when they first took to the stage - and of course I bloody should.  I have no qualms about raving about this band, (in fact I give a massive thumbs up to all 4 tonight) they are superb live, tighter than some I've seen/heard recently.  Within moments you will find yourself joining in, every number was a crowd pleaser, Fukdust 4 know how to deliver - big time.
I spotted the roving reporters of PNX News also at this gig, so check out their page for possible video footage etc.

Thanks to Punk By Nature and The Boars Head, Kidderminster for a storming night, the venue, especially the sound gets top marks.  I'll be making the trip across the Mid-lands in the near future, for another of your promotions.

JUNKO FUSE (CD EP) - MUCH OVERDUE

Picture
I received the Junko Fuse ep ages ago (September), unfortunately personal circumstances sidelined the review writing process and I retreated somewhat, now that life has moved on I will be playing catch up and trying to find appropriate words (and apologies) for these late reviews.

I try to see the bands that I review, I have not seen Junko Fuse in the flesh.  When I first played this 5 track ep I was struck by the energy and rawness of it.  Second and third listenings, and I found that there was a fuzzed up, grungy Hugh Cornwell/Wilko Johnson feel to it, (as a 40+ yrs Stranglers fan I think that's a positive comment).  Add in some abstract song titles and you pretty much have this package nailed.  I played the ep in the car for a couple of weeks or so but have recently re-listened to it through the headphones and found myself pretty much getting straight back into it.  I hope to catch these guys live pretty soon, I see that their performances are getting some good comments down in that there London.  I'll probably add more to my thoughts after seeing them.  In the meantime go and see what I'm missing!

DEERSTOCK 2016 - WRITTEN AROUND 3RD AUG PUBLISHED 22ND

Picture
Deerstock is a music and camping festival based in the East Midlands.  Established in 2011 at the nearby (to the current location) Reindeer Inn, East Bridgford as a summer time charity festival. During the last 5 years the festival has raised around £40,000 (expected to be higher after 2016), for local charities, (even the excellent bar donates a percentage of the takings - drinking for charity has to be a winner!)
Jed Southgate is the head honcho of the festival, a former ’77 type punk and all round music guy, he has built up a trusted crew around him and is ably assisted by Naomi and Joe Woolls, they are local to the area and the wider music scene, and they are totally committed to great music and a family friendly atmosphere.
Over the last couple of years Deerstock has been pretty much minding it’s own business and very quietly establishing itself as a small family friendly festival, and has been growing in stature, in organisation and in reputation.  The organisers pride themselves in putting on a good cross section of bands and entertainment primarily over two stages and over three days, (although the camping opens a couple of days before the weekend and the music continues in the glade area a good while after the main stages close)..
The facilities are rudimentary, but more than adequate for hardened festival goers.  And the organisers/staff/helpers are all really keen to make the punters experience a great one.  There is an indoor marquee stage and a larger outdoor one, the distance between them being a matter of 100 metres.  There is no overlap of the sets.  There is a 3rd stage 'in the glade' for acoustic shenanigans.
I admit to being a bit sniffy about the quality of bands at Deerstock in previous years, 2015 was a big improvement, but the line up this time around (2016) saw two major headline acts, Eddie & The Hotrods and Dreadzone close the respective nights, and the other bands on the line up were fantastically diverse, entertaining and engaging.
Deerstock 2016 was not a two-band festival, it had a good mix of local talent and showcased some very carefully chosen (and really good) bands.  I only visited on the Sunday and was really pleased to be able to see The Outlines (see previous review), Headsticks, (review soon) and Resistance77, these bands shone out for me in amongst some quite acceptable folk, some laid back bluesy jazz, some ska, an impromptu tug-o-war and lots and lots of smiling faces.
I even managed a smile myself at the Bar Steward sons of Val Doonican who succeeded in getting the gathered assembly to partake in some party antics.
The early bird tickets for Deerstock 2017 are already on sale.  If the gradual improvement of bands and facilities is going to continue (and I have been assured that this is the aim) then I can see this festival being a very popular festival and selling out pretty quickly.
The central location (just off the A46 near to Bingham and East Bridgford) means that it is accessible for most, and it could easily be incorporated into a pre Rebellion trip from the South, stopping off in the Midlands before heading up for the annual carnage.
I am sure that there will always be a strong punk element to the bands on show, I’m already working out a way that I can get to more than one day next year!

THE OUTLINES + DEERSTOCK 2016 - 3RD AUGUST

Picture
The Outlines : Sreets of England A couple of things happened for me at the Deerstock Festival this year.  If I was remotely spiritual then I would probably describe it as 'the scales falling from my eyes', as I'm not let's just say that it was feckin awesome!
(I'll come back to the festival in a later piece, as it is worthy of a section all to itself).  I arrived on the Sunday, the last day of the festival, and wasn't sure that I'd even make that, but so glad that I did.
As I settled in, wandered around and said 'hello' to folk I was struck by the lovely atmosphere and smiling faces.  I even grabbed a beer and stood and listened to Jake Smallbones sing some Country twiddly-twaddly stuff.
And then waited for a new band (for me) to appear on the main stage.  The Outlines are a local band (Warsop - near Mansfield), Kyle Peters : Vox and Lead. Martyn Brown : Vox and Bass.  Dean Hill : Drums.  And as such they could've been put on for local interest.  How wrong.  I was grabbed from the start to the finish of their all too brief set.  I had a closer look at them, just to see if they were in fact wearing boyish masks and there was some grizzled old punk underneath.  Oh no, the skinny, low slung jeans confirmed their age and belied their expertise.
'77 MEETS SKATER PUNK IN A SLIGHTLY SWEARY AND RELEVANT HIGH ENERGY, BLOW YOUR MIND, SINGALONG STYLE.
After finding out that Kyle Peters is a past member of Ferocious Dog, I decided to dig a bit deeper and then dig into my pockets to buy their album, just to make sure that I wasn't getting carried away by the Festival atmosphere.  I've yet to climb aboard the Ferocious Dog love-in bandwagon, The Outlines are a completely different proposition, absolutely hit the spot for me.
Streets of England is the first album from The Outlines, currently available from the band at gigs and via their Facebook page, (link later as this is a popular band name!) there isn't a weak track on the album, these guys are as tight as a ducks chuff and definitely more melodious!
There is no set formula for this band, their accomplished playing and sound knit really well together, their obvious closeness on stage shines through on the album.  Expect a sound reminiscent of early Rancid and a 77 style fused with the current Surf Punk sound.  They perform the occasional Clash cover in their live set, but they are brimming with originality and great tunes.
I will be actively seeking this band out on their subsequent outings, they really are an exciting act, buy the album, check em out live, and promoters - get them booked.  Take Note, there will be some more established bands who will be reluctant to play with The Outlines as they will be outshone by them, but rest assured that the crowds, the old farts like me, and the young alt-crowd - not like me - will absolutely love/appreciate/'
sick' them.

VIDEO + BAND REVIEW - 23RD JULY

Picture
SYTERIA : When I get Out of High School   A slight departure, and a step into the slightly controversial.  Syteria are a female fronted rock band, they comprise of Jackie (Guitar + Vox), Julia (Vox), Keira (Bass guitar + Vox), and Pablo (Drums).  Jackie has a punk/rock background and still appears with Girlschool, (she has an impressive rock CV and her previous involvement in Deja Vu with Andy from Flies on You led to this review),   Julia and Pablo (brother and sister) originate from Argentina and Keira plays bass for Syteria and established 'Southern Rock' (whatever that is!) combo Straightshooter.
The band are based in South Yorkshire and are currently playing gigs around the UK. They recently played the Blank Generation festival and were described by an esteemed patron as 'a balls to the wall punk rock band'.

And now here's the controversial bit, there have been comments in social media about female concert goers and some female fronted bands receiving unwanted sexual harassment.  There's just no place for it, and it is something that needs addressing, confronting and removing from our scene.
I guess that when I was asked to review this video I was carrying this particular monkey on my back and my heart sank a little bit, I felt conflicted, not because of the musical content, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but because of the nature of the video.  There's no getting away from it, I have watched the video a couple of times, (I've listened to the track far more and shifted it onto  a nusic device), and it's clear that the video will become a talking point amongst those who highlight the issues I've just mentioned.  In my view, it could detract from the musical content.  But put that aside and you are left with a very catchy and accomplished track, heavy on the riffs and the repetition, it's a singalong (hey! hey!) type of tune, slightly American in flavour?  I found myself being drawn into the song, it has an earworm type of potential, and will no doubt regularly feature on next terms school runs.
How would you categorise Syteria?  They are an extremely photogenic band, a kind of amalgam of Suzi Quatro/Adam Ant/Nita Strauss and Lemmy.  If I was forced to put them into a pigeonhole, then I'd say that they'd fit easier into 'rock' than anything else, but I'm pretty sure that they'd wriggle and fight just to prove that they can make you listen wherever you wanted to put 'em.
Would I go see them?  Well yes, I would. Judge me and be damned!
Oh, and here's the video....

ALBUM REVIEW (SORT OF) - 21ST JULY

Picture
When I started to compile gig listings, (to ensure I stopped missing gigs) I had no idea where it would lead me.  Just like the constant following of a 'suggested' link on you tube can steal hours of your day, or maybe that's just me, I have happened upon some great bands and some great people.  Doug Aikman from FLIES ON YOU is such a being.
FLIES ON YOU : etcetera
Released in March 2015, so why bring it to your attention now?  Firstly I have only recently discovered it, and secondly, I have some news - if you care to read on....... (in a kind of Mills & Boon dot, dot, dot scenario)
Let's just deal with etcetera, a collection of 15 skilfully penned, poignant tracks.  Not one of the song lyrics wastes a word, this Leeds based duo (Doug Aikman and Andrew Watkins) are lifelong musos, and draw from a wide range of influences and experiences to drive their message home.  As a Stranglers, Killing Joke, and Bauhaus fan I guess that I am an easy target for FLIES ON YOU, but this album does not just paint some dark dystopian and rhythmic landscape, there are some bright colours within their palette.  The first 4 tracks lead you into the world and then - 'Roofspace'.  Bloody brilliant!  Can't stop listening to this, it's on every device and gets plenty of hammer on each one of 'em.  After the upbeat reggae stylee we return to some darker stuff, 'Our little secret' is memorable, probably as it hints at sexual abuse.  And then grit your teeth as you listen to Thatcher lying through hers.  The pleasing poetry thereafter strikes  a chord, and may well be relevant for recent days.  'Action Stations' is another beautifully crafted song, it brought to mind conversations between parents and kids, and all the while plotting the downfall of those in elected power.  There are 5 more top tracks after this one, each is worthy of mention, but I have something to tell you.    This is a great album, check out their earlier stuff too, some absolute treasures hiding in there.
And, here is the news?

Well, FLIES ON YOU are in the final throes of completing a new album, put this on your calendar, write it on the back of your hand, or make a note somewhere.
I doubt that there will be bells and whistles and marching bands hailing the release, but don't miss this.  Really, everyone who I've shared this bands stuff with have been blown away.  There's a treat in store...

ALBUM REVIEW - 14TH JULY

Picture
5 Go Mad : lashings and lashings of five go mad

A CD offering of 11 diy punk rock tunes.  Lashings and lashings of 5 go mad picks you up by the bootlaces from the opening and then puts its arm around your shoulder and kicks you out of the door leaving a cheesy grin on your face, and with you probably shaking your head in disbelief as you pick yourself up and dust yourself down muttering, ‘did I really just join in with that drinking and wanking ditty’.

If ever there was a ‘Mickey Flanagan the musical’ then 5 Go Mad would provide the sound track.

As soon as the package arrived I whipped it out and switched the machine on……. Lord knows what the neighbours thought as I drew the curtains and settled back for an uninterrupted session. I admit that it’s not the longest that I’ve ever had the pleasure of, but it gave me half an hour of aural ecstasy.  Anyway, this CD arrived at the same time!

Having seen this band very recently it was but a short and drunken step to secure one of their CD’s, the energy, exuberance and alcohol fumes enjoyed at their live shows is easily translated into these songs, and if you buy the CD you have the added bonus of being able to listen to it without the distraction of band members members being on show.  It would be fair to say that the drummers arse appears in more punk photographs than the rest of the band put together.

And now to the album, unlike some of the more well known and overly hyped ‘tongue in cheek’ punk bands this mob tells it how it is, a bit rude, sometimes bawdy, but not with the outright offensive stuff, in fact the most outrageous lyrics are often heard being directed at themselves.

If you take the time to go and see them, and then get yourself to the bar and have a chat with the guys afterwards you will find yourself surrounded by great people and uncontrollable laughter.  And so it is with this album, open your mind, open your ears and have 30 minutes away from the trials and tribulations of every day strife.

Highlights :      She’s Not Quite Right  {Short and to the point}

                             Punk Police  {Get the message?  Well, Fuck Off}

                            Ginger Beer  {Brian in chortle mode - titter ye not missus}

                            Drinking & Wanking {Just classic observational rudity}
(And if you don’t get a mental image of Father Jack whilst listening to Drinking & Wanking then you may need to                                   check your pulse).

A present day tonic for a shitty time.

5 Go Mad are :
Alan Calver   (vox and bollox)
Brian Barnett (lead guitar and laughter)
Andy Matthews (rhythm and piss)
Jon Lamb (bass and booze)
Wozza Warren (stix and arse)

QUICK REVIEW - 8TH JULY

Picture
The Muffin Heads are a 3 piece punk/grunge band from Essex. They are made up of Bex (vocals/bass), Pete (backing vocals/guitar) and Nick (drums).  Comprising of  hard riffs and growling vocals.  Righto! (that's from the very professionally put together electronic press pack) now here's my two pennorth - listening to the double A side single I would say that this outfit is more 'rock' than 'punk' but definitely have the ability and sound to easily attract die-hard fans from either, or both genres.

QUEEN BITCH/MEDIA VULTURE was released on June 17th 2016 through small  London based indie label Regent Street Records, and Queen Bitch has
been played on BBC Introducing Essex (must be a non sweary version of it somewhere!). Media Vulture was premiered on Soundart Radio's Generating Steam Heat show.  At sub 3 minutes Queen Bitch packs a lot into it, these guys certainly make the right sounds, the vocals are delivered with attitude and a sneer, ('growling' is probably a few years, and many bottles of JD away for Bex),  the rock beat and riffs are an open invite to mosh your socks off, (or maybe nod your head a bit at my age).  Absolute kudos for getting some airplay already, I reckon that there will be a fair amount of alt/rock/punk (insert pigeon hole at will) radio types who will champion this tune.

Here's the video, have a watch/listen, this band really do have that 'we are going places' feel -

Picture
And now to Media Vulture, where, at present you will have to take my word for it!  There is a more precarious bridge between the crossover of genres than with the first track, this is more riff laden and with some controlled feedback thrown in. When I saw the 'skyscrapers' on the soundcloud page I knew there would be an instrumental outro to this number, just to wave us off.  Another accomplished track, more rock, less punk.  I seem to be building up a fine library of female fronted bands that I currently enjoy and The Muffin Heads will sit nicely in amongst dragSTER, Healthy Junkies,  and Pussycat & the Dirty Johnsons.

They have a few dates arranged, but be assured that this band are hot property - promoters, grab em while you can.  This band are on their game, proper social media, press packs, audio, videos, (welcome to the new breed!)

NEW REVIEW #2  7TH JULY

Picture
I’ve been listening to punk music since 1976, I was a 14 year old rocker back then but punk came along, grabbed me by the long and greasies and after a quick visit to the barbers I was ready to stick two fingers up to authority and take everything that this new music could throw at me. Almost forty years on I went to the Undercover Festival at Bisley and it was there that I first saw Rage DC - you see this is an album review and not just a trip down memory lane.  I was immediately taken by their sound, by the sheer belief in their message and the proper no holds barred delivery.

Rage DC could be a punk band from the height of 1977 (see that introductory ramble was relevant), they are massively popular with all of the people that go to see them, they always give a full on show and truly care about the punk community.  The music is genuine and relevant, delivered with no fuss and a ton of attitude, there are sing (shout) - along choruses and some fantastic musicianship.  This is jump around, punch the air, tap your feet and enjoy yourself punk, roll up your sleeves, and get down and sweaty with this lot.

You can probably tell that I like this band a lot, you just know that these are the type of guys that would never let you down.  Rage DC are a 4 piece from Bracknell, Loric (Vox and Lead), Graham  (Rhythm and Vox), Chris (Bass and Vox) & Ziggy (Drums).  The band are usually so busy doing their punk music, that promotion and social media stuff is usually replaced with good old fashioned networking, gigging and just being thoroughly great people.

And so to the CD, ashamed to say only recently purchased as I have usually been either too wasted or still enjoying their live performance to think about merch.  Having rectified this oversight I have to say that the CD has not been out of the player, I think it was a fiver but I'd pay double that at least.  It first had the light of day in 2015, it features most of the numbers that you will hear at their live shows.  It's a DIY album, available via direct contact with the band or at their gigs.

WHAT YOU GET IS JUST WHAT YOU DESERVE is a 14 track CD of driving punk rock, delivered by a band who know exactly what this music is all about.

No point in taking this CD track by track (listed later) as I will just be saying a similar thing, from the opening ‘R.I.P Mr VIP’ about the falling from grace of the rich and famous, to the closing track  ‘War (George and Tommy) there is not one track that you are tempted to skip.  The lyrics are strong, some clever bits, some catchy bits and lots of bits that will have you singing along in no time.  Yes, there’s social commentary, yes, there’s politics, and even the odd reference to packed lunches and Munch Bunch, underlining the fact that these guys fit in regular jobs between lots of hard gigging and supporting various charities through their music.  And if I haven’t talked you into buying/listening to the album, or getting out and actually shaking these guys by the hand then I’m slipping.

NEW REVIEW #1 7TH JULY

Picture
I'm always a little concerned when being approached to 'do a review' of an album from a band who I haven't seen live or heard before......and so it was with THE CRASH MATS slightly eponymous album NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL CRASH MATS 69.  The album is 11 tracks of fluffy, furry, fuzzy skankin (skunkin') diy punk.  Lyrically, probably not to be taken too seriously, but musically the guys have some balls, and are probably hiding their slight musical insecurity by saying, 'we're just having a laugh really'.

On first listen, (I do try to listen a few times before setting pen to paper - quaint I know,) the album totally flew by.  When I sent Evil Bazz this message I probably should've had a think about what I was saying, and adding 'which is a good thing' could've been misconstrued and caused a delicate artiste to become upset!

Righto, the blurb... these guys are a 3 piece hailing from the North West, Evil Bazz - Bass & Vocals, Señor Royales - Guitar & Backing Vocals, Chris da beat - Drums.   They are playing a few gigs with, the currently very popular Wonk Unit, I can see Wonkers being fans of the Crash Mats too.  WARNING! Going to see both bands on a regular basis may result in you having to have your tongue surgically removed from your cheek.

As always, I'll let you find out about this band for yourselves, but here's the general griff.  I wrote the review in one sitting, I'm guessing that the album was similarly done.  It's a good debut, I found myself a bit frustrated with some of the comedy cliches and phrasing (these kind of passed me by on first pass), as there is definite talent in this trio. The opening track 'Smoke all night' shows this and is, for me a really strong opener.  At 3:20 'Pablo' is the longest number of the 11 and is accomplished, but overshadowed by 'Smoke all night'.  There follows some fluffy and fuzzy, probably haze infused, lighter stuff, not a negative, but a different sound to the openers - 'Sega' is a bit sing-along, and 'Tommy' is a shouty thrashy thing.  'Sausage Roll' and 'Batman' are short-lived, but I found that the latter stayed with me longer than some of the lengthier tracks, (maybe I should dust off The Shadows compilation).  'Legalise' follows, and I enjoyed this immensely, (please note the irony and the past tense) simple, it announces the intent of the band, and has a good cross genre feel.  I'm not a grapple fan, (although did carry out bucket duties for Vic Faulkner when he came to Worksop Leisure Centre in the 70's). but 'Royal Rumble' is a good stand alone number and will no doubt resonate with WWE fans, or whatever it's now called.  'Heavy Metal' is a bit forgettable, and is thankfully followed by a couple of Bad Manners-esque bop around ditties entitled 'Ratface' and 'Get me off this ride'.  That's it, you're done!  CD over, in a flash and no hint of a slipped tongue or reciprocal oral pleasures as hinted at in the album name.

I will be making a point of seeing this lot live, maybe you should too - in the interim, if you like raw, uncut stuff then give this album a listen.

‘Late44’ is the 2015 album from Louise Aubrie.

It is an accomplished genre spanning album.  It showcases her pure, authoritative voice, an ability to write poignant and resonant lyrics and allows the other band members the space to expertly express themselves.

This is not a punk album, it is more mainstream alternative/garage, it is easily accessible and a pleasurable listen.  All of the tracks have clean musical lines and a clarity of sound.  The first track really caught my attention, a great start, I would’ve been very happy indeed if it continued along in this ‘Stooges-like’ vein.  It didn’t, the other tracks cut across a variety of styles, they all stand alone and yet hang together well, there are rock n’ roll/rockabilly influences and an edgier U.S garage style.

This album has been expertly reviewed and commented upon elsewhere, and so I’ll give you the courtesy of providing you with a track list and album details later but will concentrate on the new single and video, as that’s what I've been asked to do!

SINGLE :  TOO LATE
RELEASED JUNE 2016

As with the remainder of the album, this is an assured and confident track.  It will no doubt appeal to fans on both sides of the Atlantic.  I enjoyed the visual treat of the enhanced monochrome images and found that I was drawn into the song very quickly.  Catchy stop/start guitars and a clear narrative make for a great single.

If you are an Adam & the Ants fan and have been to see them recently then the other members of the Louise Aubrie band may seem familiar to you, certainly the guitar sound of Tom Edwards is clear in this track, (as with some of the others on the album).  The other band members Joe Holweger (bass guitar), and Andy Woodard (drums) appear in the video, these are currently touring with Adam Ant, but a certain David Ruffy is credited as drum smith on this album.

Too Late has a contemporary edge to it, radio stations will undoubtedly lap this up.  I can imagine that this track could easily become a summer time favourite of the larger stations.  I wouldn’t usually describe the sound as pop punk, (never really got a handle on that, but it kind of works for this), I would quite happily sing along to this track on the way to a festival or a family summer holiday, in the knowledge that the rest of the family, (who refuse permission for me to play my Killing Joke stuff whilst in close proximity) won’t be nagging me to switch this one off.

The album has a certain Kirsty MacColl/Blondie feel, the vocal style of Louise may account for this, and the fact that Louise has surrounded herself with musicians who have top drawer punk credentials means that this should be a popular album and single for those who like their punk smooth and legible with a contemporary storyline and singable choruses.  It will also appeal to loads of mainstream music fans who will like the fact that they are able to embrace someone who is a bit alternative.

Guilty pleasure? Yep!
Downloaded for the summer hols? Yes, I enjoyed it.
Will I recommend it?  Well yes, but not to all of my rowdy mates.

You don’t get owt for nowt.
So, when punkmonger received an e-mail from Leeds/Huddersfield based post punk band 'Klammer', with a private link to their new album of the same name there was a certain degree of wariness.

This is a band that I had only vaguely heard of, and never seen, I had no idea what to expect and with a name like Klammer I had wrongly surmised that I was going to be listening to a shouty, thrashy metal vibe.  How wrong was I.

Upon first listen, I sat, and did just that.  I actually listened, from start to finish - an album that grabs your attention.   For me there was a definite Gang of Four vibe, maybe others of that ilk too.  There’s a tendency towards the catchy sing-along hook, I can imagine almost all of these tracks being enjoyed live.

By the time that Reciprocate (Track 5) appears the album is in full swing, and continues along a self-assured course of post punk music which has its roots in so much that is good of that genre.

The album is one that sneaks into the aural subconsciousness (particularly pleased with this) and although there is a dark broodiness coursing through the album, it is an easy listen and it will no doubt appeal to a wide ranging audience.

The stand out tracks on the album, for different reasons are Opposites Detract, And This Is How the West Was Won, and Heavy Weather.  I understand that Everything Depends Upon the King will be the new single, this for me is a little lighter than those tracks that I have previously listed.

Klammer are scheduled to support a variety of high profile bands in the forthcoming months, listening to this album has prompted me to look them out, (see you at The Doghouse, drummer permitting).

I’ve seen Department S a few times recently, I’ve always been drawn to their music, but even more so nowadays.  I would suggest that they were almost a guilty pleasure of the 1977 era punk.  Nowadays it's easier to come out and actually wear the T-shirt!

They are currently on tour as a 4 piece and at every concert that I have been to I have stood by and watched and listened to the crowd as they are surprised and then won over by the sound, the energy and the musicianship in the performance.  If you have never seen Department S in the flesh then I urge you to look them out and go and see them soon, tour dates are here.

You will not be disappointed, you will not be standing still for long either.  The energy and on stage chemistry of these guys is infectious, and so assured that, (in my opinion) they often eclipse the bands that are to follow.

And now to the new album, due for release by Westworld Recordings on 27th May 2016 and can be purchased (and pre-ordered) on vinyl, CD and download.

It is clear that the band are thoughtful in their approach to all things musical, their live set list draws the audience in, and the same has to be said about this album.  Almost immaculate, (I didn't notice any flaws, but Mr Jones told me that there are a couple) both in concept and in the music.  There is nothing negative to say about any track.  There are some brilliant stand alone numbers, all of which would grace many discerning radio station playlists and then there are others that just grow and grow - I don't often reach for the headphones when listening to a 'punk' record but, the depth of sound on this album is not to be overlooked.

Stand out tracks?  Well all of them, but When All is Said, and All is Done and Cause, and I Believe (all in the live set) are particularly great.  And then, I Said You I dare you not to sing along from the second listen, and in closing Age of Control in a brilliant Kraftwerk cum Numan (with an individual twist) finale to the album is just 7+ minutes of pure musical pleasure.

Just get the album ordered, it's a belter and then some.

Post Script....  It is now some weeks since I reviewed the album, I've been to a few concerts, got some new albums and yet, I still have this CD on almost constant play.  Which track is the current favourite?  Well is none of the above, it is On My Own (Again).

There’s a new wave, of the punk variety, gathering momentum in Scotland at the moment.  It’s not quite at tsunami level just yet but, those involved are doing their level best to increase the intensity to the maximum.  This wave will leave a lot of music and bands in it’s wake.

ReAcTioN are one of the bands leading the charge, and have recently released Accelerator on Tarbeach Records.

Accelerator is a great album, it takes you on a fantastic journey from start to finish, rather than saying ‘this track sounds like…. ‘ or, ‘they were clearly influenced by…..’.  let’s take the album as a whole.

There are 14 (they don’t do odd numbers) tracks, available on CD or download.  Is it punk?  Hell yes!  Is it like something that you have heard before?  Well probably, but not necessarily all in one place and with so much energy.

Each track is well crafted and has a real driving edge to it, the lyrics are punchy, some are catchy, and some will make those of a certain age look wistfully into the distance and remember those days when substance excesses didn’t cause heartburn or palpitations - or is that just me.  'Faster' and 'Weekend Offender' just edge past the other tracks for me, but each one merits an honourable mention.

I’ve seen Accelerator get rave reviews from people within the industry and although it would be typically controversial to argue against the trend I will not, and cannot.  I received the free download of the album first and was instantly struck by the breakneck speed (no pun intended re the first track, ‘Dead Boy Racer’).  This doesn’t stop whatever the subject.  There isn’t a weak track on this album, and that includes  a cover of ‘Falling in love with you’ (I can now consign the UB40 cover to the ‘dead in the water’ pile).  And the dub mix of Fireball XL5 was surprisingly enjoyable addition too.

This is a CD that will be played and played in the car, probably until Heavy Drapes release their album and then I will be in a state of conflicted happiness.

VIVE LE ROCK MARCH/APRIL CD FEATURING :

IGGY POP / WITCHDOKTORS / WHITE APE / LAST GREAT DREAMERS / BRANDERMEN / THE NOVEMBER 5 / MING CITY ROCKERS / HEAVY DRAPES /
MARK AYLING / THE TUESDAY CLUB / CRIMINAL X / HEALTHY JUNKIES / RIOTS / SWEET LITTLE MACHINE / EXEDRA
After a huge search of the local newsagents and then supermarket stands and then larger newsagents and a pointless purchase of Mojo magazine (don't even ask why) I realised that I would have to order Vive Le Rock from their website.  It arrived the very next day and I couldn't wait to tear into the free CD, (I'm keeping the magazine for some in-flight reading) I should declare here that I am very much biased towards the Witchdoktors, Heavy Drapes and Healthy Junkies as I've seen them all recently and enjoyed their live music immensely.

With the confession out of the way let's get the party started...
Iggy Pop gives a great live performance of Cold Metal here and is accompanied by Steve Jones, how on earth can you follow that?

Well by WitchDoktors of course and their Tie Me Up, a fantastic live band, genuine rock n roll of the trashy kind.  Great guys and a great sound.  If you get the chance go and see them, tour upcoming.

White Ape and Barabas came next, I confess to not knowing this London band, but I will be watching out for them.  On first listen this track passed me by, but it's a grower and had me tapping along second time around.  Mental note - not a car track when daughter is present!

Last Great Dreamers' Dope School started a bit clichéd, and continued in the same vein for me.  I was aware of this band in the '90's, seems that they are touring again.

Brandermen doing a passable shouty impression of Seasick Steve and playing a ditty about Pig Farm Blues.  It might be a Conservative favourite but not one of mine.

The November Five followed on with Deeper Days, another new one to me.  I was immediately struck by the simplicity of this track and how it immediately grabbed me.  Reminded me a little of Television, liked this a lot.

Ming City Rockers provided this particular Scatter Brain with some pleasure.  Not heard this before, and the Smells Like Teen Spirit like opening was overcome by some great vocals and driving guitars.  Another band I'd go see.

Heavy Drapes, the Edinburgh 4-piece with attitude, edginess and naughtiness, get a middle position on the CD but Should I Suck or Should I Blow, is a stand-out track.  Coinciding with the release of the CD single of the same name this band are creating waves wherever they go.  Watch for the name, they are not to be ignored.  Go see them live and enjoy the punky party.

Mark Ayling provides an acoustic story of The Fantastic Mr Gray, sit back, relax it's storytime with a dark edged humour.

The Tuesday Club provided this dyslexically challenged writer with the track entitled My Consciousness.  Not heard these before, and with detective hat on I found that they are from (Walmington-on-Sea)  THANKS TO AMANDA AUSTIN, THEY ARE FROM ST. ALBANS, (Detective hat to you)  and nothing to do with the Arsenal podcast of the same name.  Catchy tune, worth following up on.  An 8 piece of varying ages.... will have to put these on the list.

Criminal X had me worrying about googling them and their title track 1984, from Chesterfield and used to be called Criminal Sex.  Raunchy raw punk with a healthy nod to some guitar skills.  Worth inclusion on this CD.  Fast-paced and enjoyable.

Riots - I.  Not in the same order as shown on the CD sleeve, a Scandinavian band of some standing (formerly Goldcrush) and a good track.  Not one of the strongest here, but their album is a good listen.

Healthy Junkies, Don't Give a Damn.  But clearly they do!  Excellent sound, a tight unit, with excellent volcals and musicianship.  Brilliant live set.  This is a strong track from an excellent album.

Sweet Little Machine began the end of the CD with We Used to Own These Playgrounds.  Mmmm! I should be spouting red hot effusiveness about this band from my home town, but this track left me a bit cold.  Preferred Save Our Bones, and hoping to catch them live to do them justice.........not sure a person of a certain age (ancient) would be the target audience.

Exedra provide the hypnotic closing track Elemental, I am glad that I stuck with the repetitive opening as I found this track to be a rather pleasing end to this excellent CD. London based Exedra provide a bit of shoe gazing psychedelia in a chilled out fashion stylee.
