Born to Destruct are a hard working 4 piece from Cambridge, they have a loyal and rowdy following mainly consisting of good natured older punks and some badly behaved dinosaurs. Their music is loud and raw (roar-some) rock and roll, encouraging lots of dancing and joining in. If you stood still long enough to take their lyrics on board then you would understand why the band are so well liked. They don't take themselves too seriously, and they have a genuinely upbeat message for those having a bad time with life. But it doesn't stop there, lead vocalist Woodstock is an unsung (sorry) hero, when not hammering out the heavy riffs and vocals he is very often messaging the Destruction Crew behind the scenes and checking that they are ok and finding out if there is anything that he, or the band can do to help.
The most recent release is actually more of a bundle - not unusual for BTD as they have merch a plenty! Two CD's plus T-shirt plus complimentary stuff! Facebook link here
The Book of Destruction Rock n Roll is the first CD onto the player, it's a total joy, especially for those who have seen this band live. Eight firm favourites from previous albums and the live set. Just the job to get you warmed up for the new (11th) album.
So here it is - DESTRUCTAGEDDON
In a previous life I was described as a 'rough diamond' I wasn't quite sure how to take this at the time, and was even less sure after I checked up on it. The person responsible assured me that it was a compliment, so I've always seen it as such. Here's a clutch of rough diamonds - good natured but a bit naughty - for your delectation, a self assured 'this is who we are, so get over it' vibe, and a step up from previous albums.
THIS IS THE SLEAZE : incorporating the immediate call and respond 'mind says yes, body says no, what to do? give up - fuck no' Great opener, sleazy glam-rifftastic. REAL DEAL : has to follow my personal favourite and it took me a couple of listens for it to grow on me - it's none the worse for that, and properly real. DESTRUCTAMANIA : quick and to the point Hey Hey! HOPE FOR THE HOPELESS : wanders a bit til the 'You Give Me Hope' repetitions, then I'm into it. DESTRUCTAGEDDON : immediately hooked into the song with strong guitar opening and then we're off - early Slade meets late Motorhead in back road carnage. Another crowd pleaser. IT'S ALL IN THE REFLEXES : bit of a spoken artistic twist before the throbbing rhythm kicks in. Have I said that this is their best album to date? Well it is. ROCK N ROAR : a tipping of the Studded Top Hat to many past musical stalwarts, see if you can catch 'em all. Tempo change and a rocking end to another winner. Found myself looking forward to this track, it's got me hooked. 31-10 : I struggled to get to grips with this one, I've no doubt that it's all there, but not the easiest listen for me and probably the one that I could do without. CATS DON'T, SO WHY DO YOU : Big thunderous opening and pounding beat, asking 'why do you lie?' NO SHAME BOOGIE : Yes! Get those big boots a shuffling and take your hands out of your pockets and lets have some whoah-woh-oh's! And do the walk of shame. M.A.F : Just hold on a minute, I've walked into the arena at Download, great rocker of a track. Compulsory mosh time, and yes it is 'mad as fuck'. Longest track on the album, lots of duelling guitars in the metal style, get your heads down n groove. ROCK N ROLL DESTRUCTION : An idiots guide to Born to Destruct all wrapped up in a 'Destruction for Dummies' track. Why these guys will always have a special place in my heart. FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE : The finale, an upbeat message (not surprising that this lot go down well at many festivals but especially Nice n Sleazy where the equally upbeat and positive Uncle Stu puts them on - pandemic permitting).
13 tracks have flown by each one has been lovingly crafted and brings with it a beaming smile and a welcome positivity. I've had very little chance to get out in the car to blast out these CD's (my usual modus operandi to aid reviewing) but when I'm allowed out I will be taking both with me.
